Boloni to coach Al Wahda?
Free of contract after he was sacked by Standard Liege, Romanian head coach Ladislau Boloni could sign for a United Arab Emirates club, but for Al Wahda (the UAE title holder) not Al Hilal as previously thought. Sheik Saeed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the Arab club’s financier, stated for gooolonline.com that an agreement has already been reached: “We will bring Boloni, a great head coach we wanted after he left Al-Jazira in 2008. Boloni refused back then, invoking family problems, but now we have reached an agreement and we will sign the contract,” the sheik stated. According to ‘Adevarul’ daily, Boloni will receive EUR 2 M per year and will be tasked with reaching the semifinals of the World Club Championship that Al Wahda hosts on December 8-18.
Ballack out of the World Cup with ankle injury
Germany captain Michal Ballack has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his ankle in Chelsea’s FA Cup final win over Portsmouth on Saturday, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Monday. The DFB said Ballack underwent a scan on Monday which showed that he had partially torn a ligament in his right leg. They said his right ankle would be placed in a cast and he would have to wear a special shoe for two weeks once the cast had been removed. The DFB said it would be eight weeks before he could resume training. The World Cup starts in South Africa on June 11.
Fencing: Ana Maria Branza wins tournament in Nanking
Romanian fencer Ana Maria Branza, runner-up at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, has won the women’s sabre tournament in Naking (China) after defeating Poland’s Magdalena Piekarska in the final, score 15-6. Branza defeated Venezuela’s Maria Martinez in the first round (15-7), China’s Yin Mingfang in the second round (15-9), Hungary’s Emese Takacs in the last-16 stage (15-3), South Korea’s Jung Hyo-Jung in the quarterfinals (15-13) and Canada’s Sherraine Schalm in the semi-finals.
Journalists defeat diplomats in soccer
The 8th edition of the MAE Cup, the only sports event dedicated for the diplomatic community in Bucharest, continued on Sunday within the Diplomatic Club. The day’s main event was the football game that pitted the diplomats against the sport journalists. The latter won the game, score 5-3. The winners will take part in the International Media Olympic Games in Butgenbach (Belgium) on May 24-31.
Judo: Alina Dumitru wins in Tunisia
Alina Dumitru (27), winner of the Olympic Gold in 2008, has restarted to win Gold medals. After winning the European title for the sixth times in Vienna, Alina struck again at the Grand Prix that the International Judo Federation organized in Tunisia. Alina won a new Gold medal after defeating France’s Laetitia Payet in the final of the 48-kg category. Alina received a check for USD 4,000 from the competition’s organizers and one for EUR 800 from Eduard Doandes, president of the Romanian Judo Federation.
