Boloni to coach Al Wahda?


Free of contract after he was sacked by Standard Liege, Romanian head coach Ladislau Boloni could sign for a United Arab Emirates club, but for Al Wahda (the UAE title holder) not Al Hilal as previously thought. Sheik Saeed Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, the Arab club’s financier, stated for gooolonline.com that an agreement has already been reached: “We will bring Boloni, a great head coach we wanted after he left Al-Jazira in 2008. Boloni refused back then, invoking family problems, but now we have reached an agreement and we will sign the contract,” the sheik stated. According to ‘Adevarul’ daily, Boloni will receive EUR 2 M per year and will be tasked with reaching the semifinals of the World Club Championship that Al Wahda hosts on December 8-18.


Ballack out of the World Cup with ankle injury


Germany captain Michal Ballack has been ruled out of the World Cup after injuring his ankle in Chelsea’s FA Cup final win over Portsmouth on Saturday, the German Football Federation (DFB) said on Monday. The DFB said Ballack underwent a scan on Monday which showed that he had partially torn a ligament in his right leg. They said his right ankle would be placed in a cast and he would have to wear a special shoe for two weeks once the cast had been removed. The DFB said it would be eight weeks before he could resume training. The World Cup starts in South Africa on June 11.


Fencing: Ana Maria Branza wins tournament in Nanking


Romanian fencer Ana Maria Branza, runner-up at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, has won the women’s sabre tournament in Naking (China) after defeating Poland’s Magdalena Piekarska in the final, score 15-6. Branza defeated Venezuela’s Maria Martinez in the first round (15-7), China’s Yin Mingfang in the second round (15-9), Hungary’s Emese Takacs in the last-16 stage (15-3), South Korea’s Jung Hyo-Jung in the quarterfinals (15-13) and Canada’s Sherraine Schalm in the semi-finals.


Journalists defeat diplomats in soccer


The 8th edition of the MAE Cup, the only sports event dedicated for the diplomatic community in Bucharest, continued on Sunday within the Diplomatic Club. The day’s main event was the football game that pitted the diplomats against the sport journalists. The latter won the game, score 5-3. The winners will take part in the International Media Olympic Games in Butgenbach (Belgium) on May 24-31.


Judo: Alina Dumitru wins in Tunisia


Alina Dumitru (27), winner of the Olympic Gold in 2008, has restarted to win Gold medals. After winning the European title for the sixth times in Vienna, Alina struck again at the Grand Prix that the International Judo Federation organized in Tunisia. Alina won a new Gold medal after defeating France’s Laetitia Payet in the final of the 48-kg category. Alina received a check for USD 4,000 from the competition’s organizers and one for EUR 800 from Eduard Doandes, president of the Romanian Judo Federation.

Armed robbery at Constanta gas station


A gas station in Constanta was robbed yesterday morning. The assailant, whose face was covered, pointed a gun at an employee and managed to take off with RON 1,500 from the cash box, Mediafax reported. According to a spokesman for Constanta County Police, inspector Radu Croitoru, the firm employee told the police the attacker was holding a gun, which he pointed at him through the window, and that he opened the door intimidated by the threat. After opening the door and allowing him in, the attacker took RON 1,500 from the cash box and disappeared. “The employee had on him, in his pocket, the mobile panic button, but it remains unclear why he only pushed it after the robber took the money and ran off from the crime scene,” Croitoru said. Police officers set up road filters to catch the thief. In the past days, other six robberies occurred in Romania.


Calarasi casino robbed


Two people wearing ski masks and armed with revolvers walked into a casino in Calarasi, Sunday night, threatened the security guard and the manager at gun point and took off with RON 15,000, with the neighbourhood police agent in the area not even trying to stop them. According to Calarasi County Police Inspectorate spokeswoman Ramona Tudor, quoted by Mediafax, the police was notified at 3.39 am by a security guard about a robbery having taken place at the casino. According to the source, the community police on guard about ten metres away from the casino entry door did not react when seeing the masked men rushing out of the premises. Early findings in the investigation show the indoor and outdoor video surveillance system was switched off when the robbery happened.


Vaslui man dies after setting himself ablaze


A man aged 30, from the Dranceni commune, Vaslui County died on Sunday night, after he set himself on fire and crawled under a bed in his dwelling, Mediafax said. According to Vaslui police sources, the man was found agonizing under the bed, by several neighbours who forced his door after seeing the smoke that came out of his apartment. Neighbours dialed 112, but ambulance medics could not save the man’s life. According to Mihaela Straub, spokeswoman of the Vaslui Police Inspectorate, the man was married and had two children, but he was alone when he set his clothes ablaze. “We do not know why he did this, but he warned his relatives on several occasions that he would commit suicide,” Straub stated.

RON 20 M worth of taxes paid by card in Q1


In the first there months of the year, Romanians paid by bank card council taxes and charges topping RON 20 M, more by 388 per cent compared with the same period of 2009, Visa Europe reports. The average value of a local council tax paid by card was of RON 279, according to Romanian banks’ reports in Q1 of 2010, Mediafax informs. Over 70,000 card transactions were performed in Q1 2010, 6.5 times more than in Q1 2009.


Forza Rossa to demand more Ferraris for Romanian market


Ferrari’s partner in Romania Forza Rossa will ask Italian carmaker to increase local market annual quota with a minimum of five units, the 26 allocated cars having been already delivered or ordered, importer General Manager Tudor Totu said. ‘It is difficult to anticipate how many extra units Forza Rossa will demand given the very high demand for Ferrari vehicles world-wide. We will apply for an additional quota of at least 5 units for the 458 Italia model,’ Totu said, according to Mediafax. The merged value of the fleet allocation for Romania this year is of approximately EUR 6.5 M.
