Ministry of Agriculture paid in full certain arrears to farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development paid in full, following the supplementing of funding ceiling, the last instalment of arrears on the animal subvention, amounting to RON 236 M, the minister of Agriculture, Mihail Dumitru, said, yesterday, in a press conference, quoted by Mediafax. The minister said there were some more arrears left of various programs, amounting to about RON 10 M. He added that the institution under his command is currently paying the 2009 subventions per surface.

“We will probably be past the estimated deadline, May 30. We’ve paid EUR 626 M-worth of subventions so far,” Dumitru added. He also announced that 1,053 million applications, for a total surface of nine million hectares, were filed between March 1 and May 17, 2010, for financial support per surface. The Payment and Intervention Agency for Agriculture (APIA) completed, on Monday, the first stage of filing applications for subvention per surface programs, bringing in over a million applications for a surface of nine million hectares. According to data centralized by APIA, most applications have been collected in Dolj, Suceava, Olt and Botosani County. The European Commission will approve the state subvention for gasoline after May 26, following which farmers will be able to receive the subventions, according to Mihail Dumitru. He added that the benefit will not be paid retroactively. Moreover, the aid per milk-giving cow could this year be cut from EUR 140 to EUR 68. A final decision on this count is to be taken in the near future.

Moving on to another topic, the minister said that the Ministry of Agriculture’s staff will be cut by 23 to 25 pc, and wages will be reduced by 25 pc starting June 1. In his turn, Adrian Radulescu, state secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, argued that reverse taxation, one of the measures to oppose tax evasion, will bring several billion euros to the farming and food budget.
