CFR Cluj wins Romanian Cup

CFR has won the Romanian Cup for the third year in a row after defeating FC Vaslui at the end of penalty shootouts on Wednesday evening (final score 5-4). This is also the second time CFR wins both the Cup and the League I title in the same season.

In a game generally dominated by FC Vaslui, a team that chalked up most of the goal scoring opportunities, CFR Cluj stuck to its “Italian” football philosophy: head coach Mandorlini sacrificed his team’s ball possession in order to stake on counterattacks. CFR Cluj’s Deac, Cadu and De Zerbi had several chances at the end of the first half but overall the team’s main achievement was that of managing to take the game into penalty shootouts where the quality of its penalty takers stood out. None of Mandorlini’s penalty takers missed, while Serbia’s Milisavljevici missed for FC Vaslui.

CFR Cluj owner Iuliu Muresan admitted that FC Vaslui played well but considers that his team was more experienced: “We are two very valuable teams; we were at least level with Vaslui but we had an edge when it comes to experience. I knew that goalkeeper Nuno Claro will parry at least one penalty shot. The whole team deserves to be congratulated and I am sure we will continue to win trophies,” he said for GSP TV.

In his turn, FC Vaslui President Adrian Porumboiu expressed his disappointment but also admitted he has no reason to sack head coach Marius Lacatus. “I am disappointed, we played well but we lost on penalty shootouts. We were the better team, we dominated the game. I have no reason to be dissatisfied with the players” he said for Digisport TV.

Lacatus resigns

FC Vaslui head coach Marius Lacatus resigned on Thursday, arguing that family reasons stood behind his decision. Lacatus is set to move with his family in Spain where his daughter will go to school this autumn. “I explained my decision to Mr. Porumboiu. If we decide to leave the country we will do it for the good of our child, with this being the only reason behind my resignation. It has nothing to do with football because from that point of view things were and are very good in Vaslui,” Lacatus pointed out.
