Foreign Minister pays official visit to Washington

Teodor Baconschi will pay an official visit to Washington from June 1 to 2, the Foreign Ministry informs. The main topics on the talks’ agenda will be an analysis of the Romanian-American Strategic Partnership, the state of play with the development of the ballistic missile defence system in Europe, the liberalization of the visa regime and economic co-operation. In principle, this particular kind of visit is arranged in preparation of President Basescu’s prospective visit to Washington. The talks FM Baconschi expects to hold in Washington will mainly consist of assessing the strategic partnership, the progress made in the deployment of the ballistic missile defence in Romania, the economic co-operation, liberalization of the visa regime, bilateral legal agreements and co-operation within the various international organizations. Regional aspects of relevance to Romania such as energy security, Greater Black Sea Region or the Western Balkans will also be on the agenda, as will Romanian-US co-operation in NATO and in the theatres of operations in Afghanistan.

Such an official visit made by the FM usually announces a visit by the president of Romania to Washington.
