AmCham: Financial crisis must not put off energy and environmental policies

The American Chamber of Commerce in Romania – AmCham Romania – is warning that the current financial crisis should not be allowed to put off adoption of policies in the sectors of energy and environment, and national legislation should allow for incentives and give enterprises the certainty that they would not have to downsize or relocate operations, Mediafax reports. AmCham Romania has announced the launching of a new position paper on energy and environment, prepared by a working group in the organisation. The documents that ahs been forwarded to the relevant central authorities details potential government initiatives in both sectors on a short to medium term to be supported by the members of AmCham Romania.

The anticipated energy price hikes, carbon emission restrictions and the fierce competition for resources and markets may attract risks, while also representing as many opportunities Romania will have to benefit from in order to secure its competitive edge in the region, AmCham officials point out. Foreign investors’ representatives advocate energy production from renewable resources, the transposition and implementation of several EU directives in the field, as well as the clarification of national legislation regulating new energies.
