Iasi: Three teens killed in train-car crash

Three teenagers were killed on Saturday night in Iasi after the car they were traveling in was hit by a passenger train traveling from Iasi to Vaslui. The driver, who had recently obtained his driver’s licence, did not pay attention when crossing the railway. “An extrication crew from Iasi was needed in order to get the driver out of the mangled wreckage. The teenagers were listening to music and did not pay attention when crossing the railway,” lieutenant colonel Dan Marciuc, the spokesperson of the Iasi County’s Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, stated for Mediafax.

Florin Cosmin Mihalca (18) and his friends Alexandru R. (15) and Manuel M (16) left a party in order to buy beer and sodas. The teenagers were killed on the spot when the train hit their vehicle. “The crash was caused by the failure to respect the road sign that asks drivers to stop when crossing the railway. The railway had no barrier or warning signals,” chief inspector Nicolae Miron, a spokesperson for the Iasi County Police, stated.

“I gave him the car key last evening for him to leave with his friends. I don’t know what happened. I came back to the country on Tuesday to see him. He was a very good driver. I was happy for him. He did not drink,” Lica Mihalca, the driver’s mother, stated. Florin was her only son.
