Bookfest kicks off today

The fifth edition of the Bookfest Book Salon, an event organised by the Romanian Editors’ Association (AER), under the aegis of the Romanian Editors’ Federation (FER), will take place between June 9 and 13, at Romexpo Exhibition Centre. Alongside people in the book business – the traditional guests at book launches and presentations, roundtables, meetings with writers, debates and poetry and music recitals – President Traian Basescu and Central Bank Governor Mugur Isarescu also announced their participation in the fair.

This edition of the Bookfest Book Salon features genuine event launches from publishing houses: Humanitas, Polirom, Corint, Cartea Romaneasca, Paralela 45, RAO, Nemira, Curtea Veche Publishing, ICR Publishing House, Univers, Vremea, Univers Enciclopedic Erc Press, All a.o. AER appointed Spain the guest of this year’s salon, meaning to start a tradition of an ever larger international presence in Pavilion 13; the value of literary and artistic works, the many translations from Spanish, classical and contemporary, authors, published in Romania, as well as those from Romanian authors published, in increasing numbers, in Spanish were the main arguments for inviting Spain to the Bookfest 2010. Various roundtables will be organised during the event, bringing Spanish novelists, playwrights and translators face to face with their Romanian counterparts. On Wednesday evening, a Spanish flamenco recital – guitar and percussion – will open the series of musical shows offered to the public by Romanian artists, and, at noon, on Thursday and Friday, actor Marian Ralea will delight children with interactive retellings of Spanish fairy-tales.

Under the heading “The Little Bookworms’ Club”, the youngest visitors will be able to come together in a space dedicated to reading, playing and creativity, offering a wide range of events: readings in the library and on stage, drawing and creativity workshops, theatre plays for children, educational computer games, traffic safety classes, conferences, illustration and photography exhibitions, contests etc. Moreover, at the “Salon’s Basket” found at information points, Bookfest visitors may donate books which will be distributed to Romanian communities in Serbia and Bulgaria and to a number of children homes in Ilfov County, by the “Ion Creanga” Library and the Philos Association of the Faculty of Philosophy within the University of Bucharest.

The Bookfest Book Salon will also run a campaign raising signatures for the promotion of books and reading, in which visitors may sign the “Hush, books are speaking!” Plea at information points, as well as write messages in the adjoined book. Bookfest opens, daily, at 10:00, and closes at 20:00, on June 9, 10 and 12, at 22:00, on June 11, and on Sunday, June 13, at 18:00.
