Elena Basescu’s friend, potential economic attaché in New York

Among the files on the Foreign Ministry’s US visa waiting list is that of Ioana Virginia Diaconescu, a friend of the president’s daughter Elena Basescu, according to an article published by daily ‘Puterea.’ Diaconescu has been tipped off as the new economic attaché at Romania’s General Consulate in New York. The two friends worked together at the European Parliament during 2009, a period during which Diaconescu earned EUR 8,600 from consulting and managerial activities, as it results from her wealth statement. Their friendship extended way beyond the Dorobanti area, as Diaconescu could be seen alongside Elena Basescu in Brussels and Strasbourg, but also in the youth organisation of the Democrat Liberal Party (PDL), among the members of the team supporting last year’s successful presidential bid of candidate Traian Basescu. Archive photographs from a televised debate November 20, 2009 between presidential contenders show Diaconescu as part of the core staff of Traian Basescu’s supporters.

News of Diaconescu’s possible future job emerged as Bogdan Ionescu, aka Syda, Elena Basescu’s boyfriend, was winner of a contest for the post of economic secretary at Romania’s Embassy in Paris, only three weeks after being hired as adviser at the Foreign Relations General Department of the Adriean Videanu-led Ministry of Economy. It was during the same period, February 16, 2010, more exactly, that Videanu also hired Diaconescu, at the same ministerial department. At the Economy Ministry however, nobody is aware of an adviser bearing the name of Elena Basescu’s friend, the newspaper writes.
