McDonald’s has RON 115 M investment in the pipeline for next two years

Largest local fast-food restaurant chain McDonald’s Romania has set up a development investment plan worth RON 115 M for this year and 2011. ‘We have already opened two restaurants – in the 1 Decembrie Boulevard and at the Sun Plaza mall, and w will open one or two more by year end and renovate those at Dristor and Pitesti. The total investment will be at RON 45 M, McDonald’s Romania Managing Director Karen Bishop told a press conference held to mark 15 years of McDonald’s in Romania. The most recent McDonald’s restaurant – in the 1 Decembrie Boulevard in the Bucharest Titan district – is the company’s 62nd in Romania, representing the result of a EUR 3 M investment. McDonalds Romania plans to open three new restaurants and remodel existing five in a RON 70 M investment. The 62 McDonald’s restaurants in 21 cities and towns in Romania employ some 3,300 workers and are visited by a total of 140,000 customers every day, the company says. Management says, from 2012 onwards, McDonald’s will continue its local expansion by opening five to ten new restaurants every year. Bishop added each new McDonald’s restaurant generates 70 new jobs.

As for financial performance, McDonald’s Romania last year posted 4 per cent turnover growth as compared with RON 400 M registered in 2008. The company’s intention this year is to grow turnover in Romania by 5 per cent to RON 436 M. ‘In Q1 we had 4.5 per cent year-on-year business growth,’ Bishop said. McDonald’s has been in Romania for 15 years and has invested RON 300 M in developing its business on the local market.
