Romania opens bilateral talks on US missile shield

Romania opened yesterday bilateral negotiations with the US on the judicial framework needed for the country’s participation in the missile shield system. An American delegation led by Ellen Tauscher, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, arrived in Bucharest yesterday on a visit scheduled to end today. The Romanian delegation was led by Bogdan Aurescu, Secretary of State for Strategic Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and had an inter-institutional character. Aurescu said yesterday the first discussions concerned the judicial framework and the security framework for this project. The Romanian secretary of state thanked the American official for the open talks. ‘We prepared thoroughly for this start within an inter-institutional work group, we’ve had twenty meetings during the last months,’ Aurescu said, adding that close cooperation is expected for the next steps.

In her turn, Ellen Tauscher, Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Affairs, said she is looking forward for cooperation with the Romanian side, based on the strong alliance the two countries have.
