Police ‘picked’ 24,000 pupils from bars in school year 2009-2010

Police officers found over 24,000 truant pupils in public houses in the proximity of junior and senior high schools, the Romanian Police General Inspectorate (IGPR) announced in a press release. Inspections by police officers at more than 3,000 owners of pubs located near schools resulted in 380 people being issued fines for selling alcohol beverages to school pupils. Also, more than 5,000 sanctions were issued for transgressions on, or in the adjacent areas of school premises, of which 190 were reckoned as offences.

Police, along with educational institutions and parent organisations, launched the campaigns ‘School is not attended in bars’ and ‘Dependent of freedom’, with the purpose of preventing the consumption of alcohol, narcotics and ethno-botanical substances by pupils. In order to prevent incidents involving pupils, the Romanian Police took actions that resulted in the number of educational units with video surveillance equipment going up by 26 per cent during the school year 2009-2010, compared to those in the previous school year. In the school year 2009-2010, a number of 3,397 education units were registered as being equipped with video surveillance systems. Police actions resulted in the number of offences committed by pupils in school proximity falling 36.6 per cent in the school year 2009-2010, from those in the previous school year, and those outside schools, by 9.48 per cent. Also, the number of pupil victims outside schools dropped 31.6 per cent, according to IGPR statistics.

The Police also informed that the number of road accidents involving children decreased from 1,562 to 1,420 in the school year 2009-2010, from the previous one. A number of 134 people lost their lives in these accidents September 15, 2009 through June 15, 2010, 11 fewer than in the year-earlier period.
