Romanian moviemakers awarded abroad

Cristi Puiu’s long reel ‘Aurora’ has won the East of the West section at the Karlovy Vary Inter­national Film Festival (Czech Republic). The prize consists of USD 10,000. Puiu is playing the lead character in the feature film that had its world premiere within the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes International Film Festival. He plays Viorel, a divorced man that suffers from a major mental disorder. ‘Aurora’ was produced by Mandragora film house with the help of the Romanian National Cinema­tographic Centre, Euri­mages, SC Serv Invest SRL, OFC Section Cinema, Centre National de la Cinematographie (France), in collaboration with ARTE France Cinema, ZDF/ARTE, the Romanian Television and HBO Romania. Viorel Sergovici is the image director. On the other hand, Spain’s Augusti Vila’s ‘The Mosquito Net’ won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Likewise, Jan Sverak’s ‘Kooky’ won the Jury’s special prize. British actor Jude Law received the Festival’s special prize.

Likewise, Adrian Sitaru’s short ‘Colivia’ won the City of Vila do Conde grand prize at the Vila do Conde International Short Reel Film Festival in Portugal (July 3-11), informs. The jury was made up of the following members: Katell Quillevere, Daniel Blaufuks, Laurent Guer­rier, Balint Kenyeres and Manuel Mozos. ‘Colivia’ tells the story of a child that finds a sick bird on the street and takes it home to cure it. Clara Voda and Adrian Titieni are part of the cast. The short also won the prize of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) at the Berlinale Shorts which was part of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, and the prize for the best short within the Romanian Movie Days section of the Transylvania International Film Festival. Curtas Vila do Conde is the most important short reel festival in Portugal and one of the most prestigious in Europe. Its 18th edition saw approximately 200 movies from various genres: animation, fiction, documentaries, experimental cinema and music videos.
