Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scan reveals ruptured muscle in left thigh

Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has ruptured a muscle in his left thigh and is unlikely to play any football before the start of the new Premier League season. The 26 year-old pulled up shortly after coming on as a substitute during Sunday’s World Cup final victory over Holland, The Telegraph reports.

Torres cut a forlorn figure after he was left out of the starting line-up by Spain coach Vicente del Bosque – and did not even warm-up with the rest of the subs – but he came on at the start of the second-half of extra-time to replace David Villa as his country’s lone striker. However, as he chased down a long ball forward, he pulled up suddenly, feeling his groin, before collapsing to the turf in apparent agony. He was eventually stretchered off.

Torres had struggled to make the World Cup, missing the end of Liverpool’s season with right knee injuries, and looked sluggish in South Africa.

He started the tournament for Del Bosque’s team alongside Villa. However, a string of lacklustre performances saw Torres dropped to the bench for Spain’s semi-final against Germany, and then the final against the Dutch. A statement on the Spanish Football Federation’s website confirmed Torres underwent a magnetic resonance scan at the Cemtro de Madrid Clinic where evidence was found of “a Grade 1 muscle fibre rupture in the left thigh.” Cadena Ser news network is reporting that the scan results will now be sent to Liverpool and it was unlikely Torres will play before the new season starts next month. The results of the scan may further confuse the striker’s future, with Chelsea hoping he will ask Liverpool to consider offers for him when he returns from holiday.

Chelsea are leading the chase for Torres and are set to open the bidding, hoping the Spaniard will ask for a move, although he may fall short of handing in a transfer request.

They remain confident that Torres wants to join them and may, eventually, offer up to £50 million for him.
