FM Baconschi: I wish granting Romanian citizenship to R. of Moldova citizens is not part of a campaign

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Baconschi, stated, on Friday, in the matter of granting Romanian citizenship to the people of Moldova: “I wish to believe that the simultaneous publication of several articles on this topic in the foreign press does not signal the existence of a press campaign in this matter. We did not violate any European regulation, so much less the acquis, we’ve acted in this respect as a sovereign state. I fail to see in what way the founding of the National Citizenship Agency, with its local branches, and the faster processing of applications to recover citizenship should affect the European Union, the Commission or the member states.” (quoted by Mediafax).

He added that evaluations made so far by European officials on meeting Schengen regulations have been positive.

“Any juxtaposition between the granting of citizenship to the entitled parties in Moldova and the management of illegal immigration flows in the EU is artificial,” Baconschi concluded.

The Western press has repeatedly criticized lately the Romanian policy in relation to Moldova.

President Traian Basescu is “cheating” the European Union, granting Romanian passports to hundreds of thousands of people in Moldova, who will be able to travel freely in the EU, the Italian newspaper ‘Il Giornale’ argued, stating that, unknowingly, the EU has, unofficially, 28 member states.
