300,000 persons left the country in 2009

Romanian temporary migrants’ favourite destination countries last year were Great Britain, Germany and Italy, each attracting 45,000 Romanian immigrants, followed by France chosen by 35,000 co-nationals, Realitatea TV informs.

Romanians who migrated permanently last year preferred to go to Canada, Germany and the USA in this order. Overall, over 10,000 Romanians left the country with no intention to return, last year. The migration wave continued in the first quarter of 2010, when a total of 72,000 Romanians left the country looking for work abroad. The migratory trend unfolds in a context where labour ethics and confidence in job stability have been constantly eroded by recession, according to Deloitte consultancy, whose specialists say that half of the Romanian employees are determined to start looking for a different job once the economic crisis is over. They are disappointed with the leadership’s decisions. Official data shows over 300,000 Romanians – over 2 per cent of Romania’s working population – left the country looking for abetter life elsewhere last year. Recruitment agency manager George Butunoiu says most of those who migrate are regularly poorly qualified, because qualified employees or people with reasonable jobs in the country have very tiny chances of finding work abroad.
