European Athletics 2010: Kaniskina leads Russian sweep of 20 km walk

BARCELONA – Olympic and world champion Olga Kaniskina led a Russian sweep of the medals in the women’s 20-km walk at the European championships on Wednesday. Kaniskina led compatriot Anisya Kirdyapkina by 10 seconds at the halfway mark and continued to pull away from the field to win in a time of one hour, 27 minutes and 44 seconds.

Mo Farah clinched Great Britain’s first gold medal of the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona by storming to victory in the men’s 10,000m.

Farah, 27, came home in a time of 28 minutes, 24.99 seconds, finishing ahead of fellow Brit Chris Thompson, who made it a GB one-two in the event.

Romanian athletes qualify for finals

Marian Oprea qualified for the triple jump final after jumping 17.03 metres at the European Championships in Barcelona yesterday. Oprea jumped 17.03 metres on his first try, surpassing the 16.75-metre limit and being the first athlete to qualify for the event’s final scheduled today. In her turn, Nicoleta Grasu qualified for the discus throw final after a 62.10-metre throw in Group B. The final for which 12 athletes qualified took place on Wednesday evening, after the closing of this edition. Bianca Perie qualified for the hammer throw final after a 68.67-metre throw.
