Gov’t cuts Education Ministry staff by 25pc

The government decided in its weekly session yesterday to cut the total number of jobs in the Education Ministry’s youth and sports structures by 25 per cent, Education Minister Daniel Funeriu announced after the session. The decision will cut the number of jobs from 4,765 to 1,239, by merging county departments for sports and restructuring the National Authority for Sports, Mediafax news agency reported. The move is expected to help the government save about RON 9 M this year and RON 27.5 M over an entire year.

So far, several ministries have announced restructuring plans and layoffs, as part of a wider reform process aimed at helping cut public expenses and curb budget deficit. Earlier this month, the government announced plans to layoff more than 60,000 people from the central and local administration. Most of those to be let go, 54,000 will be sacked from local administrations, while the rest will come from ministry structures.
