More areas under UV radiation warning

After it already troubled south-eastern Romania, UV radiation index went beyond 8 in a few central areas and in Bucharest. According to weather experts, the highest UV index this year was reported yesterday in Mangalia and Constanta (8.5), followed by Braila (8.1) and Galati (8.0). For the first time this year, an UV warning was also issued for Bucharest, where the index reached 8.1 yesterday.

The ultraviolet (UV) index is an international measurement unit for the level of UV radiation at ground level. The index is measured on a scale from 1 to 11+. The higher the value, the stronger the potential to damage skin and eyes. The prefect of Bucharest made yesterday, on RFI, an appeal to the population to avoid going out between 11 AM and 5 PM and voiced his perplexity at the population’s failure to observe warnings issued by medics and authorities, to avoid long sunray exposure. “In 24 hours, the ambulance service already received 1,152 calls for help, with 48 people collapsing in the street. So, not only they are doing themselves harm, but they also put a stress upon the ambulance service. (…) I cannot understand why, in spite of all warnings, they still go out and then have health problems,” the prefect said.
