Presidential aide: Basescu impeachment, among crisis causes

Presidential aide Sebastian Lazaroiu stated in an interview for ziare.com that President Traian Basescu’s 2007 impeachment is one of the main causes behind Romania’s extremely difficult economic situation, being a move that had enormous negative consequences that were difficult to anticipate back then, Realitatea TV informs.

When asked if opposition parties will take advantage of President Traian Basescu’s dramatic collapse in opinion polls to try to impeach him again once the government is toppled through a no-confidence vote, Lazaroiu admitted that such a plan was publicly announced by PSD and PNL. “But I don’t know whether someone pondered until now that we find ourselves in today’s economically difficult situation, especially budget structure-wise, also because of the President’s impeachment in 2007. (…) It was an ill-prepared move from the opposition parties; they expected to be successful eventually. Its effects on the parties that came up with the initiative were dramatic. There were polls that placed PSD at 15 per cent, PNL at 7 per cent and PD-L at 50 per cent! The impeachment’s effect was dramatic in a month’s or two months’ time because people considered the action illegitimate,” Lazaroiu said. The aide added that back then PSD, PNL and even UDMR “started throwing money around,” hiking pensions and other incomes to unjustified levels.
