A Romanian senior diplomat was detained in Moscow by Russia`s Federal Security Service (FSB) for alleged spying, RIA Novosti news agency reported later on Monday. The first secretary of the Romanian embassy`s political department, Gabriel Grecu was arrested while he was receiving a classified military information from a Russian citizen, the report said. The FSB said Grecu was a professional intelligence officer working for the Romanian External Information Service. “Espionage equipment, revealing his hostile activity towards Russia, was confiscated from the spy” the FSB said. No comments were made by the Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry last evening. The security agency did not reveal the identity of the Russian source involved in the case in the interests of the ongoing investigation. Espionage has been a common theme of Russian news of late. On June 27, ten individuals were arrested by U.S. law enforcement on suspicion of spying for Moscow. They were quickly tried and flown out of the United States in an exchange for four people convicted of spying in Russia for the West.
