Victor Piturca returns to U Craiova after 15 years

Former Steaua head coach Victor Piturca will return to Universitatea Craiova, the team that finished the 1994/1995 season with him at its helm. Universitatea Craiova owner Adrian Mititelu boasted on Monday that he managed to do a miracle by convincing Victor Piturca to return to Craiova. “There are high chances Piturca will come to Craiova. He is a Lesser Wallachian before anything else. I would like to step down, to enjoy some peace, to have Piturca running the club. My children and I will be only stockholders. I didn’t think that Piturca wants to take revenge for what happened to him at Steaua. Piturca said that winning one title with Craiova is like winning ten with Steaua,” Mititelu said. “We just talked, it’s nothing official. I am sorry Mititelu rushed into making public statements,” Piturca reacted. Piturca returns to Craiova after a 15-year absence. He previously coached the team in the 1994/1995 season. Back then, just like now, Piturca replaced Aurel Ticleanu. That was the last time Universitatea obtained a notable performance, finishing the championship on second place.

Piturca started this season by coaching Steaua but left the team after two legs, right after winning a home-side game against Universitatea. “If I come to Craiova I want to fight everyone. Dinamo, Steaua and Rapid too,” Piturca said. He asked Adrian Mititelu for EUR 1.5 M for transfers and a salary of EUR 400,000. The former head coach will be joined by all the collaborators he had at Steaua. The team’s goal is to qualify for the European Cups.
