Approximately one thousand people – mayors and civil servants from across Vrancea County – protested, yesterday morning, in Focsani, in front of the Prefecture, calling for the elimination of the Government Ordinance 18/2010 by which the county’s budget was cut by over RON 34 M. The mayors and civil servants are dissatisfied with the fact that local administrations in Vrancea County lost over RON 34 M, following the budget rectification, which “results in bankrupting local public government”.
They voiced their dissatisfaction with the result of talks with the prefect Ion Oprea, stating they would continue protests and would even turn to the Government. “The prefect Ion Oprea suggested we should do people brown, that is, raise local taxes so we can keep afloat. I’ve already explained to him that people can no longer put up with higher taxes as they are already on the brink of starvation,” the deputy president of the Romanian Townships’ Association, mayor Valerica Zamfirescu (the National Liberal Party – PNL), stated.
According to the latter, at present, 30 mayor’s offices in the county are already facing collapse, and the mayor’s office in Barsesti, where employees haven’t been paid their wages for three months now, is in the direst straits.
