Usury network dismantled, EUR 1 M damage caused

The Organised Crime and Terrorism Investigating Department (DIICOT) yesterday conducted a total of 18 searches at various addresses in Slatina, Olt County, to take apart a network of usurers. Fourteen suspects, two of whom are policemen, were detained and brought in for questioning. The usurers would attract their victims by promises of loans at zero interest. After giving them the money, they would start charging the borrowers interest rates as high as 300 per cent in some cases. The damage cause is approximately EUR 1 M.

Criminal group leader Constantin Enache dubbed the Mobster recruited two police workers from the Olt County Police Inspectorate, as well as a non-commissioned officer with the Olt County Gendarmerie. The law enforcers were assigned the role of putting pressure on the victims to convince them to accept paying the imposed interest and pay back the loans.
