Ninel Miculescu wins silver and bronze at Weightlifting WC

Romanian weightlifter Ninel Miculescu has won two medals at the Weightlifting World Championships in Antalya, Turkey: the Silver medal in the overall standings and the Bronze medal in the 69-kilogram category’s snatch event. Miculescu lifted 157 kilograms in the snatch event, thus winning the Bronze medal. Nevertheless, the result also helped him total 337 kilograms lifted, thus finishing on second place in the overall standings. China’s Liao Hiu won topped the overall standings with a total of 358 kilograms lifted, with Turkey’s Mete Binay winning the Bronze medal with a total of 335 kilograms.

Ninel Miculescu (25 years old) won three Gold medals in the overall standings, snatch, and clean and jerk events at the European Championships in Minsk this spring. Miculescu won the Silver medal in the snatch event at last year’s European Championships in Korea.

Although he represents one of the great hopes of the Romanian delegation at the Olympic Games in London, the Romanian athlete recently told a Romanian daily that he continues to be poorly paid: “I am not very pleased with the way we, weightlifters, are being paid because we make very little money. I for example win about EUR 300 from the club where I’m employed and I also receive ROL 7 M for being a member of the Olympic team. That totals in the ballpark of ROL 20 M. But I hope the future will be better. Maybe sponsors will show up too, maybe something changes,” the winner of the world’s Silver medal stated.
