Romanian Cup: CFR Cluj struggles to qualify

CFR Cluj, current holder of the Romanian Cup, needed extra time in order to eliminate League II’s ACU Arad in the tournament’s last-32 stage. Cristi Bud scored the winning goal in the 116th minute. “We avoided great embarrassment because dropping out of the tournament would have been a disaster given the situation we find ourselves in right now,” head coach Sorin Cartu said after the game. In other games, Rapid thrashed Petrolul Ploiesti by 5-0, while Gaz Metan Medias was the first League I team to be eliminated. Other results: U Craiova 5 – Minerul Lupeni 0; U Cluj 1 – Victoria Branesti 0; Vointa Sibiu (League II) 3 – Gaz Metan Medias 1.
