Interior Minister: Romania has too many police officers

The Minister of Administration and Internal Affairs, Vasile Blaga, stated, on Wednesday, in Constanta, that Romania has too many police officers compared to the EU average and that the problem is not understaffing, as some voices in the police argue, but the management of some of the county police departments.
“I’ve had enough of being told we have too few police officers. I have no figures other than the European ones. Romania has 54,000 police officers and another 30,000 cadres in the Gendarmerie. We are 26 per cent above the European average,” Blaga stated, quoted by Agerpres.

The Interior Minister stated the problems arising in the police activity sectors were not related to staff, but to the management. Blaga was in Constanta for the inauguration of several new border police ships. The largest and most expensive of the new ships is admiral ship Stefan cel Mare, the first of the kind ever used by the border police. The ship costs about EUR 24 M, according to daily ‘Adevarul.’
