Giulesti maternity hospital nurse remains in custody

Florentina Cirstea, a nurse at the Giulesti maternity hospital, will stay under arrest, judges with the Bucharest tribunal ruled. She is charged with manslaughter and bodily harm. The nurse was the only person held after the maternity blaze that killed six babies and injured five more. The Bucharest Tribunal on Thursday tried prosecutors’ contest of a District 6 Court ruling to accept the judicial control temporary release application tendered by nurse Florentina Cirstea. During the court session on Thursday, the session prosecutor said that the defendant, her crime aside, showed a wavering attitude during the investigation, and therefore she remains a public menace that rules her release out. The lawyer for the defendant, Florian Surghie, said the ruling was grounded in art. 5, paragraph 3 in the European Convention on human rights, on provisions regarding the reasons for temporary release.
