BNR: Tax evasion – a national threat

The biggest problem posed by tax evasion is “it has grown into a national security issue” said National Bank of Romania (BNR) Auditing Department Director Eugen Radulescu, “Jurnalul National” daily newspaper wrote. “The level of evasion is endemic… There are major weaknesses along the entire collection chain. Major distortions competition wise. Some pay, others don’t. Some are powerful and tax controls don’t reach them, they only reach the suckers,” he told the conference “Current coordinates of Romanian economic restructuring.”.
On the other hand, government lost its grip on taxation after the country joined the EU given the pro-cyclical tax policy, which is exactly the opposite to what any tax theory recommends,” Radulescu also said. “Taxes and dues galore bring nothing to the budget but create tax evasion and even the risk of an unintended mistake. If these taxes and dues were diminished, budget inflows would be higher and with less efforts,” he also said while making the point his statements should be viewed as personal only.
