Football: Preparations for game against France

Razvan Lucescu, head coach of the national football team, has called up Stefan Radu (Lazio), Ianis Zicu (FC Timisoara) and Iulian Apostol (Steaua) for the game against France that will take place on October 9 and will count for the EURO 2012 qualifiers.

The three players return at the national team after longer or shorter absences and are part of the extended line-up of 23 players, a line-up that also includes Sapunaru, Radoi, Chivu and Marica. The following players have been called up and will meet today at the training camp in Mogosoaia: goalkeepers – Costel Pantilimon (FC Timisoara), Bogdan Lobont (AS Roma), Ciprian Tatarusanu (FC Steaua); fullbacks – Cristian Sapunaru (FC Porto), Marius Constantin (FC Rapid), Vasile Maftei (FC Unirea Urziceni), Gabriel Tamas (West Bromwich Albion), Mirel Radoi (Al-Hilal Al-Saudi Club), Stefan Radu (SS Lazio), Razvan Rat (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Mihai Nesu (FC Utrecht); midfielders – Mihai Roman (FC Rapid), Ianis Zicu (FC Timisoara), Razvan Cocis (Al-Nassr Sports), Costin Lazar (FC Rapid), Iulian Apostol (FC Steaua), George Florescu (Alania Vladikavkaz), Ciprian Deac (FC Schalke 04), Cristian Chivu (FC Internazionale Milano); strikers – Bogdan Stancu (FC Steaua), Daniel Niculae (AS Monaco), Ciprian Marica (VfB Stuttgart), Marius Bilasco (FC Steaua).

Striker Daniel Niculae stated that France remains the favourite within preliminary Group D but that Romania goes to Paris determined to win. “I’m eagerly waiting for the game against France. We respect France but we’re not afraid. We will play with focus and ambition. France has a lot of young players that will want to prove they deserve their place in the main line-up. There are a lot of Ligue I players in France’s line-up following the World Cup 2010 disappointment. I don’t believe France is fragile or weakened. It has a new group of players now, a new history. It will be difficult; we too want to win the three points in order to remain in the race.” Niculae stated for ‘France Soir.’
