On hunger strike for 50 days

The health of the teacher that has been on hunger strike for the past 50 days has worsened. The woman is hospitalized in Bucharest and the doctors fear she will not resist for much longer without food. Teacher Cristiana Anghel stated that she will not give up this form of protest until her demand, namely to have the teachers’ salary hike law applied, is met. However, if her health deteriorates she could accept IVs. Cristiana Anghel, teacher at school number 2 in Caracal, has been hospitalized ten days ago within Bucharest’s Institute for Nutrition Diseases after previously spending one week within Caracal Hospital’s Anesthesia and Intensive Care ward. Education Minister Daniel Funeriu considers that the teacher is on hunger strike because she considers she was subjected to “arbitrary measures” and claims that the new education law will offer her the stability and predictability she needs in her career.

“Had you looked at the reasons for which Mrs. Anghel is on hunger strike you would have seen that they are the result of legislative changes that took place too often and that are not beneficial from many people’s point of view. System stability, predictability and, obviously, the predictability of teachers’ salaries will lead to the removal of arbitrariness. Mrs. Anghel is on hunger strike because she considers she was subjected to arbitrary measures, it will no longer be possible to apply these arbitrary measures within the framework of the law over which the government has assumed responsibility,” the Education Minister stated.
