EC drops sanctions against France in Roma issue

The European Commission announced, on Tuesday, that it would no longer initiate infringement procedure against France because the latter did not comply with European norms, by its decision to expel several Roma, after Paris offered guarantees it would modify its national legislation. Viviane Reding, the European Justice Commissioner, considers the guarantees Paris offered, at the end of last week, that it would modify its national legislation so as to comply with 2004 European norms regarding the free circulation of European citizens, are “sufficient”, according to sources. On the other hand, Reding intends to continue investigations looking into suspicions of discriminations against the Roma during the August expulsions.
