EC: Europe’s lorries face new green toll

Transport Commissioner Sim Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission, has recently met with the co-coordinators of the Transport and Tourism Committee (TRAN) of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, to inform them on the agreement that had been reached in the EU Council on the Eurovignette Directive allowing member states to introduce a new road-user surcharge on top of the existing lorry road-user toll, to meet the so-called external costs (pollution, congestion and noise), a press release informs. ‘Given the development divide among the various member states in the area of transport infrastructure, I request that the future TEN-T policy should pay enhanced attention to the development of transport systems in the new member states’, said Adriana Ticau, Vice-President of the Committee on Transport and Tourism of the EP.
