Over 7,000 serious road accidents this year so far

Over 7,000 serious road accidents occurred this year in Romania, 989 less than a year ago, the head of the Road Police Department (DPR), Chief Commissary Lucian Dinita said during the Global Forum on Road Traffic, Agerpres reports. “It is the first time in the last 20 years when the number of accidents dropped by almost 1,000,” Dinita stated.

According to the Police official, a total 1,767 people were killed in road accidents during the interval, 370 less than last year, and another 6,485 were seriously injured, down 675 cases from 2009. The DPR chief explained the declining number of accidents through the campaigns aimed at raising the awareness about the bad consequences of the failure to observe traffic rules, initiated by the Romanian Police General Inspectorate (IGPR) jointly with various NGOs and representatives of the civil society. Speeding, failure to give way to pedestrians or other vehicles, careless overtaking and pedestrians’ recklessness were the main causes of these accidents, Dinita explained.
