Romanian Cup: Dinamo, Brasov and Timisoara qualify for quarterfinals

It took extra time and penalty kicks for FC Timisoara (second place in League I standings) to defeat Vointa Sibiu (League II team) and qualify for the Romanian Cup quarterfinals. The two teams were in a tie after 90 minutes, score 1-1. FC Timisoara, a team coached by Cosmin Contra, played one man down after Bourceanu was sent off in extra time. Timisoara won the game after penalty kicks, score 4-3. “This game has to be a warning for me and for the players. If we repeat such a game we will be staying in the stands and maybe the secondary team’s players will go on the pitch. It’s not possible for all players, myself included, to play as they did today,” Contra stated after the game, being dissatisfied with the way the team played.

In another last-16 stage game, Dinamo defeated Alro Slatina (League II team), score 3-1. Dinamo striker Torje suffered an injury that will keep him off the pitch for 2 weeks. “I am pleased with the overall performance; we have to win the Cup this year because Dinamo hasn’t won anything in the last three years. Unfortunately we lost Torje and we’ll have to play without him. It was a stupid injury. Either he didn’t warm up properly or who knows. We’ll see,” Dinamo head coach Ioan Andone stated after the game.

FC Brasov (14th in League I standings) managed to defeat U Cluj, score 2-1, with the result being a veritable morale booster. “It’s for the first time after a long and tense period when I can say that we’ve won a beautiful victory and a beautiful qualification, especially since we’ve played one man down for most of the game. It’s a morale booster for all those working for this club,” Brasov head coach Danut Oprea stated after the game.

The following games were played yesterday, after the closing of this edition: Gloria Bistrita vs. Unirea Urziceni, CFR Cluj vs. FCM Tg Mures and Steaua vs. Sportul Studentesc. The following last-16 stage games are scheduled today: Pandurii Tg Jiu vs. Craiova and Astra Ploiesti vs. Rapid.
