Over 26,000 public employees to be laid off until year-end

The Government dismissed, in the first nine months of 2010, 63,845 public sector employees and, to meet targets agreed upon with the IMF and the EU, it needs to dismiss another 26,047 in the last quarter of 2010, sources in the Government stated, quoted by Agerpres. “In December 2009, the number of public sector employees amounted to 1,379,892, and, according to commitments we’ve made, we need to cut it down at 1,290,000 by the end of 2010, while records show there were 1,316,047 employees left in the public sector at the end of September,” the aforementioned sources stated.
