Liberal leader launches tough attack on PSD

National Liberal Party (PNL) leader Crin Antonescu on Friday attacked fellow opposition Social-Democrat Party (PSD), blaming it for President Traian Basescu’s rise to power. At a meeting of PNL Local Elected Officials’ League in Brasov, Antonescu said Basescu was made president by PSD and more specifically, by the “greed, clientele, thievery and demagogy” of the Ion Iliescu-Adrian Nastase rule.

He added that now, Basescu and Democrat Liberals risk bringing PSD to power again and underlined that in this context, it is only up to PNL to stop this process. The Liberal leader further attacked ex top PSD members such as Gabriel Oprea, Marian Sarbu and Cristian Diaconescu, who managed to get Basescu re-elected last year, “when nobody else could.” All the three mentioned above have in the meantime quit PSD and are now part of another centre-left party which supports the current government.

Antonescu also slammed PSD for ‘readily’ making a deal with PDL to set up a joint government last year, after “years of warring.” In the context, Antonescu opined that PSD and PDL would reach and agreement again “if it suited them.” Commenting on recent statements from various PDL leaders that the ruling party and PNL should find ways to collaborate, Antonescu insisted that his party will never join “Mr. Basescu’s Democrats.” He said Basescu’s offer to PNL is that of “stealing alongside PDL.”

Antonescu’s criticism of PSD was rejected by ex PM Nastase, who said the PNL leader was wrong to criticise his party’s possible allies. “Antonescu is wrong because you cannot just go on and attack everybody and you cannot set up an alliance system by attacking the other party. (…) When you talk about PSD as a whole and criticise it as a whole, you already have a problem with political partners. I can’t understand this,” Nastase said, quoted by Realitatea.
