SRI head says no reason to worry over terrorist attacks

Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) Director George Maior stated in an interview for the national TV station that based on the information it has the Service considers there is no need to raise the terrorist threat alert level in Romania, at the same time opining that the debate over intelligence services is qualitatively poor and driven by vested interests.

Maior was asked about the terrorist threat alert level in Romania against the backdrop of information concerning packages of explosives sent from Yemen, repeated terrorist alerts in Europe, the kidnapping of seven persons in Niger and Osama Ben Laden’s message to France.

“In light of the information the SRI collects, we consider there is no need to raise the terrorist threat level in Romania. Objectively, based on very serious evaluations, we did not feel the need to raise the terrorist alert level. We are, however, watching very carefully these developments because some are taking place in areas that concern Europe and our allies on the one hand, and on the other hand we are obviously part of a complex and multilateral exchange of information process and we too are bringing our contribution to the understanding of these phenomena,” he said.

The SRI Director admitted that the Service is more alert than it was several months ago, stating that “it’s natural for that to be so, considering the possible damages brought to the interest of allies in Europe and across the Ocean on the one hand, on the other hand the multiple implications for Romanian citizens that no longer have to be seen strictly in relation to national territory.”

George Maior maintained the statement he made one year ago back when he argued that Syrian Omar Hayssam will serve his prison sentence in our country. However, the SRI Director did not say when Hayssam could be extradited. The Syrian President will visit the following days so a possible extradition agreement could be discussed with the authorities.
