Environmentalists blocked traffic around Parliament House

The representatives of several environmental NGOs took to the streets, on Monday, to protest against an emergency ordinance which would allow public authorities to find alternative uses for green areas. Traffic on the United Nations Boulevard was blocked for several dozen minutes by protesters. Shortly after the protest broke out, several gendarmes were dispatched to reinstate public order. According to the spokesman for the Bucharest Gendarmerie, Marius Militaru, this was a spontaneous protest, which was not announced beforehand at the Mayor’s Office. “The organizing of such unannounced actions is sanctioned by fines ranging between RON 1,000 and 5,000,” Militaru stated.
