Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad begins today a two-day visit to Romania at the invitation of his counterpart Traian Basescu, the presidential office announced yesterday, quoted by Agerpres. The visit comes in the context of 55 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries and as continuation of the Romanian president’s Damascus visit in October 2008. During his visit, Al-Assad will have meetings with Basescu, but also with the prime minister and Parliament speakers. Several documents are expected to be signed on the occasion of the visit, including an extradition agreement. Although Bashar al-Assad’s visit is not tied to that, the signing of such an agreement could facilitate the extradition of Omar Hayssam who was convicted for terrorism in Romania in June 2007.
