Basescu-Sarkozy incident

Shortly after the group photo in the opening of the NATO summit, cameras caught an incident between President Traian Basescu and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy. Basescu was seen heading to Sarkozy, trying to have a discussion. After a brief exchange of words, the French leader is seen saluting Basescu and walking away. The gesture was interpreted by the media as a snub, but Sarkozy later denied the reports. The French president said he did not stop to talk with Basescu at the time because he was in a hurry. He voiced appreciation for the Romanian leader and said the two had the occasion to discuss at the summit “about 15 times.” But the French media, particularly daily ‘Le Monde’ described the incident as a “brutal refusal” from Sarkozy to the Romanian leader.

After the Sarkozy incident at the group photo, Basescu headed to Italian PM Silvio Berlusconi, who was having a conversation with his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban. Basescu and Berlusconi were seen discussing for a while and the Italian PM repeatedly made a gesture with his hand to his head, the sign used to express about somebody that they are crazy, according to press reports. It is not known what the two leaders were talking about.
