Presidential bid – probable but unlikely, Ponta says

Social-Democrat leader Victor Ponta on Sunday said his running for president in 2014 is not a likely hypothesis, as he considers he would be too young and still has a lot to say in “the executive area.” Also, the PSD head said he wouldn’t like his party to act politically only by taking into consideration the state positions its leaders might have. “If the Social- Democrats can take power with a well designed social programme and the condition is Victor Ponta would not be PM, I will embrace this condition immediately,” he told ProTV.

The Social- Democrat also said he is however taking into consideration the fact that PSD might give a premier, while the PNL might give the president in a would-be coalition with the Liberals. Ponta also said that, in case the opposition’s plans to get rid of Boc government would work, the most likely governing variant would be “a PSD- PNL joint government with a good anti-recession plan.”

“If the voters would agree this solution, the Social-Democrat Party would not have an ego problem with giving the country a premier while the Liberals give a president.”

The Social-Democrat also said that, regarding his party’s priorities, “impeaching President Basescu is no longer an issue.”

“I don’t believe it would be of actuality. I believe impeaching a president, no matter who that president is, must only be made when it comes in conflict with constitutional proceedings. If the president had signed pension law which was a fraudulent law, this would have been breaking Constitution, and I am glad that, for the first time, Basescu has acted against his own ego and has sent the law back to Parliament,” Ponta also said.
