The secretary general of the Greater Romania Party (PRM), Gheorghe Funar, called yesterday for a referendum to remove the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) from government, as well as at having the party declared illegal. He stated that, if the president Traian Basescu refused to have the referendum, political parties and the civil society had to take action. Gheorghe Funar denounced UDMR and the Hungarian government on several counts, including their refusal to allow Romania’s National Day festivities to take place at the Budapest National Theatre and hosting the meeting of the National Council of Szeklers in Romania in the Hungarian Parliament.
