League I: Otelul Galati – midseason champions

Otelul Galati won its home-side game against Astra, score 2-1, in the last leg of this season’s first half, thus retaining its position at the top of the standings and making a redoubtable bid for the title. Antal and Pena scored for the hosts in the 5th and 58th minutes respectively, while Tigoianu scored for Astra in the 64th minute.

“The second half of the season is just around the corner and I want us to win more points than we did in the first half. It will be very difficult but not impossible. Being a midseason champion is a first for me as head coach and at the end of the season I badly want to give the people of Galati a reason for joy many of them dream of,” head coach Dorinel Munteanu, former national team player in the 1990s, stated after the game.

“I congratulate my players for this victory and for this good first half of the season. With a little care we could have had a few extra points,” Munteanu stated, being quoted by the club’s official website. In his turn, Otelul Galati general manager Marius Stan stated that he is proud of his players: “We’ve met a good, extremely well articulated team and that makes our victory so much more precious. We’re happy to have finished the first half of the season on first place. It is the players’ full merit, they should be praised. I am proud of them because they’ve obtained far more than I had hoped for and I too am excited because this is the first time in 20 years when I finish the first half of the season on first place,” he stated for Agerpres.
In another important game, FC Timisoara, the only team that could have surpassed Otelul in the standings, managed only a goalless draw in its away game against Dinamo Bucharest. Timisoara’s Goga (56th minute) and Dinamo’s Kone (74th minute) signed the only goal-scoring chances of a modest game. The result is more on FC Timisoara’s liking since Cosmin Contra’s team is still just three points behind League leaders Otelul. The result leaves Dinamo eight points behind the top position.

Other results: U Urziceni 2 – Sportul Studentesc 1; FC Vaslui 3 – Pandurii Tg Jiu 1; FC Brasov 2 – Rapid 0; U Cluj-FC Tg Mures 1-1.
