Address by the President of the Council of Ministers of Romania, Ion I.C. Bratianu, to the delegates of the Great National Assembly in Alba Iulia (the 14th of December 1918)

‘We have been waiting for a thousand years and here you have come so that we may be separated never again.

There are moments in a nation’s life of such glorious happiness that can redeem whole centuries of grief.
Our joy is not the joy of a single generation of people, it is the blessed shiver of happiness of the entire Romanian people who, for hundreds and hundreds of years, has lived under the wrath of the most terrible destiny, without losing its unalterable faith that the day will come to unite us, the day that had to come, that it would have been impossible not to come (…)’
