‘(…) It is but obvious that the acclamations with which you have greeted our draft Resolution are not just beautiful and evanescent flowers of national feelings and animation, but also the natural consequence of a deep and unmovable conviction springing from scientific views embraced by human civilisation.
(…) We, most honoured National Assembly, see in the achievement of our national unity a triumph of human freedom. We wish not to become from oppressed oppressors, from subjugated subjugators. We wish to enshrine the freedom of all nations and of all citizens living on this land.
(…) We wish for no one to shed the tears that we have shed during so many centuries and we wish to feed on no one else’s power as our power has been fed on for centuries in a row. We trust in our endurance and in our strength and do not intend to weaken other people’s strength.’
