Yesterday meanwhile, opposition Social Democrat leader Victor Ponta criticised President Traian Basescu’s “absurd, undiplomatic and lacking reasoning” stance in what regards his recent statements about a possible unification of Romania and Moldova.
Ponta said the president’s statements only pushed Chisinau further away from the EU and Romania, by encouraging anti-European and anti-Romanian feeling in the neighbouring country. Ponta added that the statements were not made intentionally but “out of incompetence and lack of wisdom.” In an interview to a central daily last week, Basescu said Romania and Moldova will be soon together in the great European family and said it was possible for the two countries to unify at a certain point.
