Serie A: Mutu heads Fiorentina to win

A second-half header by Adrian Mutu gave Fiorentina a narrow 1-0 win over Cagliari that moved Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side closer to European qualification than relegation for the first time this season in Serie A. Mutu met Geatano D’Agostino’s free-kick with a superb flick early in the second half to net his first goal of a troubled campaign, according to Eurosport.

Mutu – who returned from a doping ban in October and has been accused of assault in two separate late-night incidents – had a sublime backheeled goal correctly ruled out before half-time and it seemed that the talismanic forward would have one of those days.

But, six minutes into the second half, the former Chelsea and Juventus striker found the back of the net with a wonderfully-guided header after a pinpoint free-kick delivery by D’Agostino.

The match took on a new dimension as Daniele Conti tested Boruc with a low free-kick, while down the other end Agazzi made a spectacular save from Adem Ljajic’s point-blank header.

Fiorentina thought they had a second with 13 minutes left when Donadel smashed in a brilliant first-time shot from 30 yards after Agazzi had cleared a corner with a strong punch.
