Turcan asks Ponta to resign over Schengen row

PDL vice-president Raluca Turcan claims there is evidence about PSD leader Victor Ponta pleading in Brussels against Romania being allowed to join the Schengen Zone. “Let me remind that the leader of PSD said that, if he is proven to have opposed Romania’s accession to the Schengen Zone, he will resign from Parliament. The president of PSD must give up his mandate of parliamentarian, otherwise PSD must compel him to do so. The political approaches made by Victor Ponta in the group of European socialists and among European Parliament officials against the accession to Schengen disqualify him as a politician. Preventing the free circulation of Romanians in the EU is not an act of political sabotage against the government, but one of betrayal against all Romanians, an action that proves the political immaturity and irresponsibility of the PSD president,” PDL vice-president Raluca Turcan claims in a press release. Similar accusations were also brought by PDL EuroDeputies Cristian Preda and Traian Ungureanu.

On the other hand, PSD President Victor Ponta accused Turcan yesterday of “perpetrating the lies of PDL EuroMPs.” “I said it, and I am saying it again – we, as a party, have always supported Romania’s accession to the EU and to the Schengen Zone. The main talks, the main steps were made during the PSD governance, and the fact that we are now in peril of not fulfilling all technical criteria is a consequence of the Boc Government’s incompetence and corruption,” Ponta stated.
