Radio Romania Muzical presents, live, two important opera premieres: on Tuesday, December 7, “The Valkyrie”, by Richard Wagner, opening the 2010-2011 season at the Scala in Milan, and, on Saturday, December 11, “Don Giovanni”, by Mozart, at the Vienna State Opera, with a Romanian name among the soloists: mezzo-soprano Roxana Constantinescu.
According to a release sent to “Nine O’Clock” by the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Company, the “Opera Night”, broadcasting live from the Teatro alla Scala in Milan is already tradition: for 10 years now, Radio Romania Muzical has been broadcasting live the performance which officially opens the season at the prestigious Opera in Milan. On December 7, starting 6 pm, the Romanian public is invited, via the wavelengths, to take their place in the opera house where tickets are booked many months in advance, by those who can afford them. The performance opening this season is “The Valkyrie”, by Richard Wagner, the second part of “The Ring of the Nibelung” four-part cycle. The guest conductor for the evening: the remarkable Daniel Barenboim, the first conductor who dared approach Wagner’s music in Israel, after World War II, and who was awarded, in 2006, the official title of “special guest” of the Scala in Milan.
The cast includes celebrated figures of the lyrical music scene, who appeared in productions of “The Valkyrie” performed at the Bayreuth Festival, which is the ultimate validation for soloists approaching Wagner’s music: Swedish soprano Nina Stemme, German mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier, Ukrainian bass Vitalij Kovalijov, soprano Ekaterina Gubanova, and tenor Simon O’Neil, from New Zealand.
On Saturday, December 11, starting 8 pm, music-lovers are invited to another live broadcast in the “Opera Night” series, this time from the Vienna State Opera – “Don Giovanni”, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. An important presence in the cast is mezzo-soprano Roxana Constantinescu (aged 30), who has been a soloist of the Vienna State Opera since 2007. She is taking on, for the first time, the part of Donna Elvira, a defining part in the career of any lyrical artist.
The opening performance at the Scala can be listened to on Radio Romania Muzical, on 97.6 and 104.8 FM or on the website www.romania-muzical.ro, and will also be broadcast by Radio Romania Cultural.
