PDL Senator Viorel Badea accuses Serbian pressure on Romanian community

PDL Senator Viorel Badea, Vice-President of the Foreign Affairs Committee, yesterday said Romania should stop giving Serbia any kind of unconditional support as the country’s authorities exert ‘unthinkable’ pressure on the Romanian ethnics living there. Badea made those statements after talks with representatives of Romanians in Serbia, who had requested a hearing by the Committee to report abuses made by Serbian authorities. Badea said Romania should perhaps explore the option of an inter-country action under the European Human Rights Convention, as all Romanian efforts to convince Belgrade that those communities are just ‘an ambassador of the Romanian nation to Serbia’ have so far been to no avail. During the hearing before the Foreign Affairs Committee taking place yesterday, the representatives of the Romanian community in Serbia accused Serbian authorities of abuses. They said that some of the pressure being put on them was the result of steps taken in view of setting up a new Orthodox parish in the commune of Zajecar.
